On Friday, March 25th until Saturday, March 26th , Lucia and Renata Holguin from the Elite Swimming Team of Club Campestre de Cali, traveled to Bucaramanga to participate in the tournament of Club Campestre de Bucaramanga, both were awarded in the interchange of swimming. Lucia won first place in each category, while Renata received three first-place medals in freestyle, backstroke and relay, second place in butterfly style and third place in breaststroke.

“What I admire about Lucia is that even if she is not fast, she always tries and always succeeds. So at the beginning I didn’t think I was going to win because I don’t consider myself as fast as her, but I started to follow Lucia’s steps, so I kept practicing, I went to train even more often, I concentrate more, and that’s how I managed to be fast,” Renata said.

Likewise, her sister Lucia told us what she admires about Renata “She is very fast while she’s swimming, she is always on time for practice and she always follows the coach’s instructions” she also told us what she feels when she sees her sister competing “I feel joy, we are always cheering her on whether she wins or loses”.

Having references within swimming is something that athletes usually follow, however, they look up for each other, following each other’s paths and as time goes by they always try to support each other arduously.

The obstacles they have faced in swimming have not been an obstacle as they both dream of making it to the Olympics. “I want to compete in the Olympic swimming pools, because I really like to race and swim. My mum always tells me that I have a lot of opportunities and I love it when she says that,” Renata revealed. Lucia also mentioned that “I think I would like to compete in many places, meet many friends and be an Olympic competitor and to be  recognized around the world”.

“When I head to a swimming competition I feel very anxious, when I approach to dive out, I start to shiver but when I enter into the water I feel like I enter into another galaxy, I walk into another world.  Then I think to myself that I have to do this for my dad, my mum and my two sisters, so I start swimming really fast,” said Renata.

The most important key to gaining knowledge and discipline is through training. Lucía told us about her preparation before heading to the competition “The first thing I do is I train a lot, at the practice we see a lot of well known trainers, we start to swim and they keep an eye on us and they start to give us recommendations. I train really hard and I get better and  better as I train”.

In the same way, Renata mentions how she deals with her training sessions “What we usually do at the club is, two months before the competition, we enter the Elite team and we start to train from Tuesday through Saturday. We do not attend any kind of event that is not related to the swimming competitions and when the day competition arrives we have so much fun and I love it.”

Congratulations to Lucia and Renata for having an excellent competition!
