Our tenth-grade student, Martina Vélez, won a full scholarship to participate in a Round Square International Service Project (RSIS), which will take place between December 5 and 18, 2023, in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in Thailand.
The purpose of Round Square with this volunteer project is to engage students over 16 years old in a sustainable initiative, participating in various community development projects. In Martina’s case, she will be providing support in the establishment of a community research center, ranger cabins, observation towers , citrus herb planting, hornbill nest boxes, and beehive fences. Many of these actions serve to mitigate risks and improve coexistence between humans and elephants, which are abundant in the hills of Tenasserim.
Martina shared that once Juliana Diez, the IB MYP counselor, sent information about this social service project to their emails, she became interested and began researching until she came across this scholarship. Four months later, she received a letter of acceptance for her participation.
“I made the decision to go. I’ve been on other exchanges, but I don’t know Thailand, and I also love elephants. That was what motivated me the most to go and do this,” the student mentioned.
“I have high expectations. I know it’s going to be super cool, and I’m going to meet a lot of people from around the world,” she added. She’s been 8 days in so far and from what we hear, the volunteers have faced many trials and tribulations such as working as a team to make a bird box, analysing elephant herd data, as well as designing their own socially responsible businesses. Martina has been growing in tenacity for sure!
Let’s remember that the mission of the Round Square organization and the project Martina will be part of not only allows her to engage in reflection and action processes to understand the needs of rural communities in Thailand but also provides her with the opportunity to venture out and learn about another culture, Thai fauna and flora, elephant behavior, and sustainable development.

Nuestra estudiante de décimo grado, Martina Vélez, ganó una beca completa para participar en un Proyecto de Servicio Internacional de Round Square (RSIS), el cual se llevará a cabo entre el 5 y el 18 de diciembre de 2023, en la provincia de Prachuap Khiri Khan en Tailandia.
El propósito de Round Square con este voluntariado es involucrar a estudiantes mayores de 16 años en un proyecto sostenible, participando en diversas construcciones en pro de la comunidad. En el caso de Martina, dará apoyo en la realización de un centro de investigación comunitario, cabañas para guardaparques, torres de observación, plantación de hierbas cítricas, cajas de nido para hornbills (cálaos) y cercas para colmenas de abejas. Muchas de estas acciones sirven para mitigar los riesgos y mejorar la coexistencia entre humanos y elefantes, que abundan en las colinas de Tenasserim.
Martina nos contó que una vez Juliana Diez, consejera IB MYP, envió la información sobre este proyecto de servicio social a sus correos, se sintió interesada y empezó a investigar hasta encontrarse con esta beca, que 4 meses después, le dió el visto bueno para participar.
“Tomé la decisión de ir. He estado en otros intercambios, pero no conozco Tailandia y me encantan también los elefantes, eso fue lo que más me motivó a ir a hacer eso”, mencionó la estudiante.
“Tengo muchas expectativas. Yo sé que va a ser súper chévere y que voy a conocer a muchísimas personas alrededor del mundo”, añadió. Hasta ahora lleva 8 días y, por lo que hemos oído, los voluntarios se han enfrentado a muchas pruebas y tribulaciones, como trabajar en equipo para fabricar una caja para pájaros, analizar los datos de las manadas de elefantes y diseñar sus propios negocios socialmente responsables. Martina ha crecido en tenacidad.
Recordemos que, la razón social de la organización Round Square y del proyecto que hará parte Martina no solo le permitirá sumarse a procesos de reflexión y acción para comprender las necesidades de las comunidades rurales en Tailandia, sino que también le brindará la oportunidad de aventurarse y aprender sobre otra cultura, la fauna y flora tailandesa, el comportamiento de los elefantes y el desarrollo sostenible.
