The personal project is an individual project taken on by 10th-grade students in IB schools as a final project before transitioning from the MYP to the DP. It consists of three main components: a product, a process journal, and a report. Students have the opportunity to select their topic and learn about it as they research and develop their chosen product. The MYP personal project aids students in their development of the attributes of the IB learner profile. It provides an opportunity for them to practice and strengthen ATL skills developed during the MYP, and consolidate their path as lifelong learners.
Generally, students arrive at 10th grade not knowing much – if anything – about the personal project. I hope to guide current and future 10th-grade students through this journey and lessen their burden, by educating them on the task they must take on. The Personal Project can seem daunting at first, but let’s break it down.
- The first step is selecting a topic. As a 10th grader, everyone will tell you to choose something you like or are interested in, but I will tell you to choose something you are passionate about. It may be harder to decide on a topic you are passionate about rather than one you simply like, but that is the key. Choosing to work on this project in your free time instead of relaxing, is a hard decision to make, but if you don’t make it, you will end up cramming your entire project into the final month. This is not a good path. You can combat this by choosing a topic that excites you, one you want to work on. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when selecting a topic, almost anything can work for your personal project.
- Next, you will develop a learning goal and product goal. The entire objective of this project is to learn something, and that something will guide your entire project. For example, my personal project was about understanding learning from a scientific perspective to be able to apply skills effectively. My learning goal was to find ways to make learning and studying more effective and efficient, depending on each person’s strengths. Additionally, my product goal was to make a guide to studying and learning in the form of a short booklet. All my research and the creation of the product was driven by my learning goal.
- Afterwards, you will create your success criteria and action plan. These are documents that will help you create your product and write your report. Think of the success criteria as a rubric. You will think of three or four criteria you wish to grade your final product on, and then you will explain each one. In my case, I wanted to create a short guide to studying for high school students, so my criteria were: Language accessibility, written content, visual content, and structure. These were the aspects I wanted to make sure were well done in my product, so I set strict boundaries on how each one should be done. As for the action plan, it is simply an agenda of the tasks you must complete throughout your personal project journey. It is detailed and must include deadlines for your tasks. It can seem tedious, but it is a truly important element to successfully complete your project.
- Last is the report, arguably the most significant part of your project. It is divided into criteria A, B and C. Criteria A outlines the motivations behind your project as well as a description and explanation of your success criteria and action plan. Criteria B analyses your journey as a student and the ATL skills you developed in the process. Finally, criteria C is an evaluation of your final product utilizing the success criteria you created. The full report must be 15 pages, including evidence. This can be shocking at first, especially if you have never taken on a project this large, but all I can say is don’t worry. You have approximately 5 months to do this project and if you manage your time correctly, there is no reason why your journey should not go smoothly.
- Throughout your entire project, you will be keeping a process journal of personal reflections about all the actions you take throughout your journey. This will show your growth as a student and help you write your criteria B of your report. Your process journal is proof of your work and one of the main elements of your personal project.
Current and future 10th-grade students, don’t be scared of what awaits you. This is a new challenge that will bring about new skills and lessons. Take advantage of everything you learn and carry it with you into the DP program, and for the rest of your life. Be responsible with your deadlines, and don’t be scared to ask your teachers and fellow students for help. As a final recommendation, I suggest working hard and having fun with it, it’s a fantastic opportunity!

El proyecto personal es una iniciativa individual emprendida por estudiantes de décimo grado en colegios IB como proyecto final antes de pasar del MYP al DP. Por lo general, los estudiantes llegan al décimo grado sin saber mucho, si es que saben algo, sobre el proyecto personal. Espero guiar a los estudiantes actuales y futuros del décimo grado a través de este viaje y aliviar su carga, educándolos sobre la tarea que deben asumir. El Proyecto Personal puede parecer abrumador al principio, pero tomémoslo paso a paso.
- El primer paso es seleccionar un tema. Como estudiante de décimo grado, todos te dirán que elijas algo que te guste o te interese, pero yo te diré que elijas algo que te apasione. Puede ser más difícil decidir sobre un tema que te apasione en lugar de uno que simplemente te guste, pero ahí esta la clave. Elegir trabajar en este proyecto en tu tiempo libre en lugar de relajarte es una decisión difícil, pero si no la tomas, terminarás comprimiendo todo tu proyecto en el último mes. Este no es un buen camino. Puedes combatir esto eligiendo un tema que te emocione, algo en lo que quieras trabajar. No tengas miedo de salir de tu zona de confort al seleccionar un tema; casi cualquier cosa puede funcionar para tu proyecto personal.
- A continuación, desarrollarás un objetivo de aprendizaje y un objetivo de producto. El objetivo completo de este proyecto es aprender algo, y eso guiará todo tu proyecto. Por ejemplo, mi proyecto personal trataba sobre comprender el aprendizaje desde una perspectiva científica para poder aplicar habilidades de manera efectiva. Mi objetivo de aprendizaje era encontrar formas de hacer que el aprendizaje y el estudio fueran más efectivos y eficientes, dependiendo de las fortalezas de cada persona. Además, mi objetivo de producto era crear una guía para estudiar y aprender en forma de una libreta breve. Toda mi investigación y la creación del producto fueron impulsadas por mi objetivo de aprendizaje.
- Después, crearás tus criterios de evaluación y plan de acción. Estos son documentos que te ayudarán a crear tu producto y escribir tu informe. Piensa en los criterios de evaluación como un rubrica. Pensarás en tres o cuatro criterios con los que desees calificar tu producto final, y luego los explicarás. En mi caso, quería crear una guía breve para estudiantes, por lo que mis criterios fueron: accesibilidad del lenguaje, contenido escrito, contenido visual y estructura. Estos eran los aspectos que quería asegurarme de que estuvieran bien hechos en mi producto, así que establecí límites estrictos sobre cómo debía hacerse cada uno. En cuanto al plan de acción, es simplemente una agenda de las tareas que debes completar a lo largo de tu proyecto personal. Es detallado y debe incluir plazos para tus tareas. Puede parecer tedioso, pero es un elemento verdaderamente importante para completar con éxito tu proyecto.
- Por último, está el reporte, quizás la parte más significativa de tu proyecto. Se divide en criterios A, B y C. El criterio A describe las motivaciones detrás de tu proyecto, así como una descripción y explicación de tus criterios de evaluación y plan de acción. El criterio B analiza tu proceso como estudiante y las habilidades que desarrollaste en el proceso. Finalmente, el criterio C es una evaluación de tu producto final utilizando los criterios de evaluación que creaste. El reporte completo debe tener 15 páginas, incluyendo evidencia. Esto puede ser impactante al principio, especialmente si nunca has asumido un proyecto tan grande, pero todo lo que puedo decir es que no te preocupes. Tienes aproximadamente 5 meses para hacer este proyecto y si administras tu tiempo correctamente, no hay razón por la cual tu proceso no debería transcurrir sin problemas.
- A lo largo de todo tu proyecto, llevarás un diario de proceso con reflexiones personales sobre todas las acciones que tomas durante esos meses. Esto mostrará tu crecimiento como estudiante y te ayudará a escribir tu criterio B de tu reporte. Tu diario de proceso es prueba de tu trabajo y uno de los elementos principales de tu proyecto personal.
Estudiantes actuales y futuros de décimo grado, no tengan miedo de lo que les espera. Este es un nuevo desafío que traerá nuevas habilidades y aprendizajes. Aprovechen todo lo que aprendan y llévenlo con ustedes al DP y durante el resto de sus vidas. Sean responsables con sus plazos y no tengan miedo de pedir ayuda a sus profesores y compañeros. Como recomendación final, les sugiero que trabajen duro y se diviertan con esto, ¡es una oportunidad fantástica!
